Women in Science Girls’ STEAM Camps 2019 Application

The Women in Science (WiSci) steam camp 2019 Application is opened, wisci 2019, aims to help bridge that gap through access to education, mentorship opportunities, and leadership training.

There is a substantial gender imbalance in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. WiSci Camps are a safe, supportive, and girl-centered environment, bringing together 100 teen girls from three or more countries, to live and learn for two weeks together, Girls are the heart of the WiSci program. WiSci facilitators teach girls to value taking risks, to bounce back after failing, and to build the reliance to keep trying again.

While attending a WiSci Camp 2019, girls can require to:

  • Partake in hands-on training to develop STEAM and leadership skills: from coding to creating a microscope with cell phones, to programming drones and artificial intelligence, WiSci campers connect STEAM with creating social impact in their communities;
  • Connect into an extensive global network, both at camp and after, full of over 500 girls and young women from over 35 U.S. states and over 20 countries;
  • Experience on-site mentorship from industry experts and build new friendships with global peers, and WiSci is a proven program for developing girl leaders interested in STEAM.

Expense

All selected participants will receive a scholarship to attend the camp free of charge, a value of over $5,000. All costs associated with lodging, food, and activities during the camp are covered through the support of WiSci partners, in addition to transportation to/from the capital city of your home country (origin of departure). Participants can bring a limited amount of spending money for small souvenirs and snacks if they wish.

Qualification

  • Self-identifying girls, ages 15 to 18 at the time of the camp, with at least one year of high school remaining during the 2019-2020 school year, who are citizens or residents of participating countries:
    • Ethiopia 2019: Self-identifying girls, ages 15 to 18 at the time of the camp, with at least one year of high school remaining, who are citizens or residents of Ethiopia and the United States of America
    • Kosovo 2019: Self-identifying girls, ages 15 to 18 at the time of the camp, with at least one year of high school remaining, who citizens or residents of Kosovo, Serbia, North Macedonia, and the United States of America.
    • Estonia 2019: Self-identifying girls, ages 15 to 18 at the time of the camp, with at least one year of high school remaining, who are citizens or residents of the countries of Estonia, Poland, Latvia, Georgia, or the United States of America.
    • Oregon 2019: Self-identifying girls, who are rising 7th and 8th graders for the 2019-2020 school year, who are residents of the Pacific North West region of the United States of America.
  • Aspirants should have a demonstrated interest in the STEAM fields and engagement in their schools and communities – if the opportunity has been presented to them. Applicants are encouraged to share if they face any personal and/or financial barriers to furthering their interest in learning about and pursuing educational and extracurricular opportunities STEAM fields.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are interested in learning more about STEAM and have limited financial resources or access to other learning opportunities. Additionally, applicants should be willing to have an open mind and interest in cross-cultural learning experiences.
